Legal Tech

What is legal tech?

The phrase "legal tech" (mechanised/automated legal services) is a hot topic in legal circles. But how can the term Legal Tech (sometimes also Legal-Tech or LegalTech) be defined?

The Lawer Portal offers the following definition at https://www.thelawyerportal.com/blog/what-is-legal-tech-and-how-is-it-changing-industry/:

"‘Legal technology’ essentially means the use of technology and software to provide and aid legal services."

Another interesting defintion can be found in Wikipedia:

"Legal technology, also known as Legal Tech, refers to the use of technology and software to provide legal services and support the legal industry. [...] Legal technology traditionally referred to the application of technology and software to help individual lawyers, law firms, medium and large scale businesses with practice management, document storage, billing, accounting and electronic discovery. Since 2011, Legal Tech has evolved to be associated more with technology startups disrupting the practice of law by giving people access to online software that reduces or in some cases eliminates the need to consult a lawyer, or by connecting people with lawyers more efficiently through online marketplaces and lawyer-matching websites."

Artificial intelligence

There are no excuses - let's tackle digitization!

"Once upon a time...there was the fairy tale of Everybody, Somebody, Somebody and Nobody. It was about getting an important job done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would take care of it. Somebody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry because it was Everybody's job. Everyone thought Someone could do it, but No One knew that Everyone would not do it. Finally, Everybody blamed Somebody because Nobody did what Anybody could have done."

Does this sound familiar? Experienced something like this or similar? Does this sound like an account from your personal everyday professional life? Actually, it is known who is responsible for something. Actually. There it is, the little word "actually". The much more crucial question is therefore, how can you become master of this situation?

Interview: "What drives us most are digital tools, that's LegalTech."

In an interview with the DiALOG Magazine, Marie-Alix Freifrau Ebner von Eschenbach, Managing Director of the Bundesverband der Unternehmensjuristen e.V. (BUJ), comments on the opportunities of digital tools, the challenges of LegalTech products and the role of the BUJ.

Amongst other things, she introduced the working group LegalTech of the BUJ:
"Our working group LegalTech is particularly concerned with the questions surrounding the use of LegalTech in the legal departments and the associated legal challenges. We want to clarify for our members what LegalTech is actually, which LegalTech solutions we can use in German companies and how LegalTech has an impact on the organization of our legal department and legal advice, for example, who is liable for the use of LegalTech solutions for errors in legal advice."
